Celebrating Sailing Heritage at the Heart of Sydney Harbour

Established in 1891 by Mark Foy, the Sydney Flying Squadron (SFS) stands as the original home of the esteemed Sydney Harbour sailing skiff class known as the 18-footers. This vibrant sailing club keeps tradition alive by hosting skiff class races on Sydney Harbour every Saturday, celebrating the summer months from October to April. Presently, our fleet boasts 11 meticulously crafted 18-footers, paying homage to renowned skiffs dating from 1900 to 1950.

The Visionary Mark Foy: Retail Magnate and Sailing Innovator

Mark Foy, a trailblazing entrepreneur (1865-1950), left an indelible mark in both retail and sailing. Initially, he established the iconic Mark Foy's department store in Sydney in 1885, later pioneering the Hydro Majestic Hotel in the Blue Mountains in 1904. In 1891, Foy founded the Sydney Flying Squadron Yacht Club, revolutionising sailing norms by introducing coloured sails and prize money.

Embracing Inclusivity and Breaking Tradition

Foy's unconventional approach faced opposition. His boats, adorned with coloured emblems, were excluded from the 1892 National Regatta due to claims that the emblems promoted gambling and disrupted the harbour's aesthetics. Undeterred, Foy organised an alternative regatta, funding it himself and promoting it as an inclusive spectacle for all social backgrounds.

Sailing into the Future with the SFS

Renowned as a visionary and passionate advocate, Foy's legacy endures, transforming open-boat sailing and capturing the public imagination. His innovative rules and colourful sail emblems propelled skiff sailing into the limelight, captivating both sailors and spectators alike.

Today, the SFS warmly invites sailing enthusiasts of all ages to experience these magnificent 18-footers. No prior sailing experience is necessary, but swimming ability is required. Prospective sailors can enjoy three outings before considering club membership, providing a chance to acquaint themselves with these boats.

Join Us: Volunteer and Be Part of Our Community

Moreover, the SFS actively seeks volunteers to contribute to various aspects of our sailing community, from rescues to race control and even post-sailing activities like barbeques and raffles. Volunteer contributions play a pivotal role in enhancing our sailing events and fostering a vibrant community spirit.
